Motorcycle Repair: 97 1200 bandit clutch, friction discs, drive plates

Question
about a year ago i replaced my clutch with a barnett unit. it recently started slipping around 7,000 rpm. i took it apart, consulted my new factory manual and discovered some of the metal plates were in backwards. they have a flat side and a rounded side. barnett says they must all face the same way. i reinstalled the clutch with the plates in correctly and it still slippped a little. i took it apart again and scuffed the plates and friction discs to remove any glazing. now it slips worse than before. i've ordered new ebc friction discs. i'm sure everything is put together properly. do you think the new discs will solve my problem?

Answer
Hi Dan,

The new driven plates should improve clutch operation, though I recommend replacing the drive plates, driven plates, and springs as a set.

The same goes for final drive chain and sprockets. Replace all as a set or the worn parts will quickly wear the new parts.

If the clutch problem persists after new driven plates are installed, replace springs and measure drive plates.

If you scuff driven plates by sanding etc.. do so from inside to outside as if cleaning a CD. Not in a circular motion.
