Motorcycle Repair: Shorting batteries, honda aero, model bikes

Question
I have a honda aero 1998 that is shorting out batteries.  I need help trying to solve this problem.  The bike runs fine and then all of a sudden it starts to pop, skip and pop and then cuts off.  Then I can test the battery and it is shorted out dead.  Please if u have any suggections they would be greatly helpful.  Thanks Shane

Answer
Shane, I am not really an expert on the later model bikes, however I believe that your bike has a CDI ignition so that the battery really doesn't have anything to do with your bike cutting out, unless there is a battery-powered control solenoid in there somewhere.

helps me get some info on your machine. You didn't say if your bike is an AERO scooter or an AERO Shadow 1100, so now I am a little confused! Found the Aero Shadow in 1998 flavor, so will go with that one.

I will surmise that your "shorting out batteries" is really batteries that are not being charged by the charging system. Go to www.electrexusa.com and download the free troubleshooting chart to help get you going in the right direction. Once you test the charging system and have a fully charged battery, then you can diagnose the rest of the bike's problems.

One of the problem areas in these bikes is the stator wiring connector, so check that first to see if there is corrosion or burned off contacts inside.

There is a FUEL CUT RELAY on the wiring harness that may either turn off the fuel pump or interfere with the fuel flow in other ways. If the battery voltage level drops below about 8-9 volts, the relay may be closing and cutting of the power to the fuel pump.

If you are losing all power to the bike, then certainly the fuel pump will quit supplying fuel to the carbs and it will quit. The bike has self-generating CDI ignition, so once it turns over, there is spark there all the time, if the battery is dead or not.

If you had a dead short in the wiring system, the fuses will blow out and putting in a new battery won't fix the problem.
