Motorcycle Repair: Trans removal for shifter pawl problem?, harley shop, speed shifter

96 FXD 5 speed shifter let go, leaving me with only 5th gear. external shifter rod clear, can move full range with no engagement. adjuster screw will not allow engagement with pawl. Feels like spring/clip fell off internal end of shifter rod.

Do I need to remove tranny to check out and rebuild internal shiter arm assembly?  how expensive might this be at the local HD?

No you dont need to remove the trans. You will have to remove the top cover as well as the inner primary so you can get to the shifter rod.
I have ne way of telling you how much it will cost at a harley shop. All over the country they have different shop per hour rates.
