Question - Mike I'm a little confused (whatelse is new Ray. I understand getting at the ball that is suppose to STOP the OIL LEAKING.

However, you said, " . . . Now, take a punch and put it into the hole against the ball. Tap it with a hammer this will reseat the ball.
( I understand that Mike ) But now you say," Now install a new ball and spring and close it up. ( I'M LOST MIKE )

QUESTIONS MIKE PLEASE

IF I JUST RESEATED THE BALL WHY? ON EARTH AM I TO INSTALL A NEW BALL AND SPRING? I WOULD THINK RESEATING THE BALL WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM.

Hi Mike

I believe I had some repair work done in you shop a long time ago. I was on a rally with: THE NORTH-EAST HARLEY FULL DRESSERS ASSOC.
THE FRONT RUBBER KNUCKLE ON MY '85 ELECTRA GLIDE CRACKED AND THE BIKE SHIMMIED AND DANCE WHEN I WENT OVER 55MPH.

AND YOU DID A GREAT JOB IN REPLACING IT ~ THAT'S IF IT WAS YOU MIKE OR YOU SHOP.

ANYWAY(S) . . . LOL
HERE'S ME SITUATIONS: I OWN A 1985 HARLEY ELECTRA GLIDE 1340cc FULL DRESSER (AND I REALLY LOVE IT)

MIKE; Here's what's been happened with it. Everytime I lay-up the bike and not ride it 'cause I'm too busy doing project around the hse.

HERE'S WHAT HAPPENS:

IT LEAKS OIL FOR THE OIL AIR BREATHER AT THE BOTTOM OF THE BIKE. ITS AN EXTENSION BREATHER AND THE OIL JUST LEAKS OUT OF IT LITTLE BY SLOWLY WHILE IT SITS IN MY GARAGE.

IT DRIVES ME CRAZY MIKE. And when I try to start the sucker a whole load of OIL COMES RUSHING OUT OF THAT LITTLE ROUND OIL BREATHER.

Someone told me (a so-called H-D man) said when the bike isn't used it just leaks. Their were made that way in 1985.
MIKE CAN YOU HELP ME ? ? ? WHY IS THIS HAPPENING.
LAST YR. I SENT OVER 2K OVER=HAULING MY BABY.

Mike I refuse to believe that BULL. It didn't do that for manmy yrs. Now all of s sudden it LEAKING !

NEED YOU HELP MIKE.
I'M IN YOUR HANDS MIKE

GOD BLESS

Answer -
Heres what is happening.
Your oil tank sits higher than your motor. In the oil pump there is a ball with a spring against it. Since the oil tank sits higher than the motor, this ball is suppose to keep the oil from running into the motor. the spring might be weak, of the seat for the ball or the ball is bad its self. When oil leaks into the motor and you start the bike, the oil pump cant pump it out fast enough so it goes out the vent. It doesnt hurt anything, but it looks bad.
Here is how to fix it.
Take a pair of lock pliers and pinch off the feed oil line. Remove the cover on teh oil pump for the ball. Looking at the oil pump it will be the one in the back, towards the motor. Remove the spring. Now, take a punch and put it int he hole against the ball. Tap it with a hammer and tap it. This will reseat the ball. Now install a new ball and spring and close it all up.
This should solve your problem.
Good luck and happy riding

Answer
Sorry I confused you. What you want to do is use the old ball for the punching procedure, then remove it and install a new ball and spring. The reason you are replacing it is the spring might be weak, and there might be small pits or carbon on the ball that you cant see. Also, when using a punch on the ball, you might put a dent in it and you will have the same problem.
