Motorcycle Repair: Steering head bearings, kawasaki zx 6r, offramp

Question
My email is : MFROMPHILLY1@AOL.COM
I have a 1999 Kawasaki ZX-6R with 63,000 miles on it, all commuting and no track time or stunts. I've never had any other problem with the bike. The problem is that when I turn my steering to the left and right there seems to be a noticable "notch" in the middle. I ride year round in all weather. I've had the steering head bearings replaced 3 times so far, this seems to cure the problem for awhile but it comes back after about 15,000 miles. I had the bearings replaced by 3 different shops in 3 different states (I'm military so I move alot), no one seems to be able to tell me why this happens and if it's normal. Is there any solution? It's an uneasy feeling turning into an offramp and feeling that little catch. Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi Mark,

I suspect bearing vibration on the bearing race may be causing the unusual wear.

The problem may be from a manufacturing blem with the frame or other part(s). Kawasaki may replace the frame under warranty as a remedy to the problem.

I don't know of any recalls on this paticular problem.

I recommend contacting Kawasaki directly and advise them of the problem. Visit "www.buykawasaki.com" to learn more about contacting them.

While there, enter your VIN into the appropriate text box to see the history of your MC as Kaw knows it.

Respectfully,
Mark Shively
