Motorcycle Repair: 74 Trail 70, clutch pack, adjustment screw

Question
Hello again

The kick start on my bike works BUT it does not seem to catch compression the first 2 0r 3 kicks, it's like it slips, the lever is tight on the shaft. When the bike is warmed up it seems a little better though. Also the blinkers only flash when the bike is reved up, they just come on staedy at idle, at high RPM they work. It does have a new coil. I tried to adjust the clutch like the manual says,1 turn clock wise but the it would not turn clockwise it's like it was bottumed out could the clutch pads be shot at 2400 miles. Its a 3 speed auto.

Answer
Steve, two things can be a factor for the kickstart issue.

One, is that the clutch is not adjusted correctly. The manual adjustment governs the clutch when you shift gears. If the adjustment isn't set correctly, the clutch will not fully engage, causing the slippage you mention.

Second, is that there are ratchet gears for the kickstarter and if they are damaged or worn from someone jumping on it a lot because the points were dirty or the carb jets were plugged and it wouldn't start, then they can be damaged after awhile.

I would suspect the first issue, however. Loosen the locknut and turn the adjustment screw counterclockwise first to see that it is free. Don't turn it too much or it will unthread inside and you will get to remove the clutch cover and fiddle with the linkages, plates, etc. If it turns counter clockwise, then gently turn it clockwise until it gently stops, back off about 1/16 to 1/8 turn or whatever it says in the book and try it again.

Just because the engine only has 2400 miles, doesn't mean that it is mint condition inside. Depends on how it was maintained and ridden previously. The other factor is that when the clutch pack is left alone with old oils for 30 years, the plates can deteriorate and/or stick together so tightly that disassembly is the only option.
