Motorcycle Repair: engine stall, honda elsinore, xs 650

Question
Bill,
I see you are a Honda Expert but maby you will drop your standards and answer a vintage Yamaha question.  I have a 1979 xs 650 special that keeps stalling on me.  It only happens with clutch pulled @ slow speeds.  Usually when making a sharp turn such as pulling into a parking spot.  If the clutch is engaged the bike will not die under similar conditions.  Last month I pulled the carbs took them apart and thoroughly cleaned them. I also just cleaned and recharged my k@n filter pods.  I don't know what this might have to do with anything but my choke doesnt work.  Whenever I turn it on the bike quickly dies.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  (and if it helps your moral conflict on aiding a yamaha owner i also own a 79 250 honda elsinore)

Check with these folks....

Sudden stalling, as you described could be improper float level settings. Choke not working is not a good sign. Did you replace all the o-rings, seals, float valve and set the float level when you redid the carbs?
You might also check around the handlebars for some kind of chafing wires to the kill switch or something like that which is affected when you turn the handlebars.
