Motorcycle Repair: backfire 84 GL 1200, honda gl, cylinder compression

Question
I just sent you a question about a backfiring problem on a '84 Honda GL 1200.  I omitted a fact that may or may not be important - sorry, but here it is.  It will not backfire with the least little bit of throttle applied, even if that allows the engine to do some braking, especially downhill.  As a reminder, the problem is that engine braking causes it to bacfire over 2000 RPM.  Under 2000 RPM - nothing.

Answer
Mark,

Thanks for the update. The same answer applies to the original question.

Check cylinder compression, valve clearances, and read spark plugs. Was the GL stored for any period? Carburetors serviced or cleaned?

I would need to know the results of these tests to know diagnose the problem further.

Respectfully,
