Motorcycle Repair: Vulcan 1600 Classic exhausts, quality pipes, aftermarket pipes

Question
I would like to drill my exhausts instead of bying those expensive aftermarket pipes. Do you think this is feasible and will i have to reset my fuel injection. How should i do this and will the sound be better or worse?   Thanks! Gerald

Answer
Hi Gerald,

I do not recommend drilling the exhaust pipes. Such practices may result in performace problems and may cost you more correcting the mistake than the cost of quality aftermarket pipes.

The engine was engineered with air/fuel/exhaust volumes to work well in a variety of elements and conditions. Improperly changing these volumes may have negative results.

Even with professionally installed quality pipes and tuning, the results may not be spot on.

In any case, avoid the temptation of drilling the pipes to get a desired sound. You may not like what you hear, beit the pipes or the service manager's estimate of repairs.

That's my advice and experience.
