Motorcycle Repair: H-D forward control replacement, clutch lever, cast wheels

Question
I have a 2005 H-D FXDWGI with 336 miles (we've had a wet and cold Spring).  Before taking delivery, I had the dealer install a SE Stage I kit with ECM recalibration, pull the baffles from the mufflers, install cast wheels, replace the handlebar (with an internally wired swingback handlebar), chrome the entire front end including ss braided cables and brake lines, etc.  All parts and accessories (including the following) are genuine H-D.  The bike has been running fine.  Today I replaced the OEM front/rear footpegs/supports and the forward controls with chrome/polished items.  I have both H-D's service and parts manual for my bike, but neither offer much help for this job, so I was forced to use the "sparse" instructions that were packed with the replacements.  The only difficulty I ran into was removing the OEM shifter linkage from the shifter rod on the transmission, which included moving the shifter rod back and forth several times.  After checking to make sure that all fasteners were "torqued" to specs, I turned the switch to the IGN position, but did NOT start the bike.  I kicked the shift lever down several(?) times to what I believe was 1ST gear, and then half way up to NEUTRAL.  The "N" indicator light on the tank lit up and I was able to easily roll the bike back and forth without pulling in the clutch lever.  When I kick the shift lever down to 1ST gear, or up to 2ND through 5th gear, the "N" indicator light on the tank does NOT light and the bike is in gear because it will NOT roll back and forth easily.  But here is my problem, when the bike is in gear and I pull the clutch lever in, the bike remains in gear.  I did "start" the bike when it was in "neutral" and it ran fine.  However I'm absolutely petrified that if I run the bike, pull in the clutch lever, and kick it down into "1st" the bike is going to take off from underneath me.  What did I do wrong?

Answer
Doesnt sound like you did anything wrong. Usually when a harley is cold it feels like its hard to push in gear with the clutch pulled in, due to the fact the clutch plates havnet warmed up. Many times when you start the bike in gear and holding the clutch in, when the bike turns over it will pull foward slightly.
Go ahead and start the bike and give it a ride, you should be ok since you didnt mess with the clutch cable.
Good luck and happy riding
