Motorcycle Repair: carburation, honda xr650r, pilot jet

Question
Wayne, I recently installed a Mikuni TM40-50 pumper carb on a 2002 Honda XR650R and it performs great!, however, in order for it to idle correctly, the pilot screw must be out 4 to 5 turns. I went from a #25 pilot jet to a #15 and it still needs 4 turns out from seated to idle properly. Am I worrying needlessly or is something not right?
                               Thank you, David Fresno,CA

Answer
David,

the Mikuni uses alot different jet numbers
than a comparable Keihin carb. In other words
don't worry too much about the numbers they
put on the jets. Instead let your engine
be your guide.

-Is the engine running smooth
or popping in the intake or exhaust?

-Check your plug colour and if it looks
tan or brownish, that's okay.

-That's a big carb so just adjust the idle
where it runs good and make sure the air
filter and box are open for lots of air.
