Hi Mike
I have a 1999 FLHTCUI with 38,000 miles.I have a noise that seems to be in the primary. The sound is a regular clicking sound. It is worst cold and only happens when the engine rpms is decreasing. As when you rev it up to clear it out or something like that.I have the primary apart to the inner case nothing.I have the rear valve cover off there is some clearance on the rockers but the oil pressure is leaked down.It does have 3000 miles on this oil change .I am about ready to service it and put it back together.HELP. Jim

noises are a real bear on here, due to the fact that I cant hear them!
Do it just make the noise when riding or all the time, as in sitting still and reving the engine?
Have a buddy dit beside the bike and put his head close to the engine and you rev it up. Are you sure it is coming from the primary?

Hi Mike
I am not a rookie but this thing is driving me nuts! It only does it when the rpms are decelerating. No ,I am not sure it is in the primary.I can rest my hand on the inner primary and I think I can feel it worst.I had a magnet come loose on a shovel once and it kind of sounded like this. There is no vibration.I realy am serionsly considering servicing it(oil changein primary, engine and transmission) and putting it together.

Answer
I agree with you, noises can drive you nuts!
If you had lost a magnet you would pick up a vibration in the motor. Since you dont have a vibration I would start looking at the lifters first. They might be losing pressure at low RPMs, due to lower oil pressure at low RPMs. If that fails then it might be time to check the roller bearings the ride the cam and last be not least the cam bearings themselves.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
