Motorcycle Repair: running to rich?, loerider, vent tube

Question
I have a 1990 loerider that I just put new plugs in and a new air filter, I sent it to the Harley shop and they said they couldn't find anything wrong with it. But ever timr I start it, oil squirts thru the air filter, the spark plugs turn black and and I loose a lot of oil. What is my problem? Is it runnung to rich?

Thank You

Answer
Pull yoour air filter out and on the back plate you will see a hose attached to it. That is the bottom end vent line and where your oil is coming from. The problem is that the oil tank sits higher than the motor. There is a ball in the oil pump under a spring that is suppose to keep oil from running into the bottom end when the bike is not running. Your spring is either weak or there is some dirt holding the ball slightly open. So whats happening is the oil drips into the bottom end. When you start the bike the return side cant pump it back fast enough, so it comes out the vent tube. The cure is to remove the spring and ball. Clean the seat for the ball and replace the spring. You can also remove the tube from the backing plate. Find where the vent is on the bottom of the motor, rotate it downward and attach a new tube to it so it vents to the ground.
Good luck and happy riding
