Motorcycle Repair: suzuki 800 valve adjustment, intruder 800, suzuki 800

Question
I recently puchesed a 96 intruder 800 with 11000 miles on it. I think the valves are chattery on it. I had the local shop listen to it and he said it sounded fine(he also said my freinds moto guzzi sounded fine which I could here clattering across the parking lot), I dissagree with him, he said it is when they get tight that you have to worry--Dosn't chatter caused by exessive play cause ware? Could you tell me the recommended clearences and procedure on adjustment please.

Answer
Hi Wes,

Loose valve clearances make noise. Tight or zero valve clearances can result with engine damages. Excessive clearance doesn't cause unusual wear. Either way, performance is affected.

I recommend the service manual to help you with the procedure. The manual has illustrated procedures and much more.
