Motorcycle Repair: fuel tank restoration, tl 125, radiator shop

Question
I,m restoring a TL 125 Honda, which has a rusty gas tank which has had some sealant tipped in it in the past. How do I get rid of the old sealant and rust etc?

Cheers

Answer
If the tank sealant is KREEM, then I believe it can be stripped with MEK, which is very toxic chemical.  You can get phosphoric acid at a hardware store or METAL PREP from an automotive paint store to help clear the rust. Yamaha makes a tank sealing kit. POR-15 gets high marks for its product, too.

If the paint is going to be stripped, you can take the tank to a radiator shop and have them hot tank it for you. That will get the rust out, so you can see what the sealer looks like inside.
