Motorcycle Repair: Two CDIs stuffed in five miutes CR80 1988, stator windings, cdi system

Question
I just bought a second hand, Honda CR80 1988 bike, ran well when i looked at it and when it was brought around to my house, about five minutes each time.(bike died at the end of second ride, thought it ran out of feul?( didn't check just refeuled )

But when i tried to start it for my son it would not start (day later).  Pulled the plug and found a very weak spark.

I took the bike up the road to back yard bike mech.  Who tested and diagonised the CDI (very rare fault apparently).

Finally i found another one (second hand) installed it, checked for spark (great)then started the bike, it ran for about 2 seconds and would not restart.

Pulled the plug again and found no spark on most kicks weak on others.

Can you tell me what could be causeing the CDI's to break down.  Mate up the road is currently on holidays.

Thanks Barney

Answer
Barney.... I am not an expert at diagnosing the more current bikes with CDI, but my guess is that A. there were issues with the CDI boxes and that they fail when they get hot or B. a bad pulser coil is creating some kind of a signal or causing a short circuit in the CDI system.
Pulser coil is part of the stator windings that is about $150 part.

Go to:
http://www.powersportspro.com/partsfish/login.asp and register, log in and check the model, year, LEFT CRANKCASE COVER option to review the parts involved. You will have to get a flywheel puller to access the stator.

Be sure that you don't have some kind of intermittent problem with the KILL Switch that is affecting the spark.
