Motorcycle Repair: FXR not running right, manifold gaskets, fxrp

Question
Hi Mike, Sorry for the delay, I was trying to take pictures of the plugs for you, but they are not coming out clear. The plugs are pretty much black with some light spots. When the bike started to run bad, I put brand new plugs in. It did not help the problem at all. These are the new plugs and only have been ran in the bike maybe 20 miles. I was thinking maybe there is dirt in the carb somewhere? Thanks again for your help, Mike

Hi,
Hope you can help me. I have a 1994 H-D FXRP with some work done to the motor. The bike has about 2000 miles on it since done and was running awesome. Suddenly it started to pop through the exhaust and carb. It also stalls and does not idle very well. The idle is not consistant. When I throttle it in neutral it will rev up and idle high for a little bit before coming back down and stalling out. The carb is a Mikuni HSR 42. I thought it was a manifold leak so I replaced all the manifold gaskets and even used a little silicone. The bike will run fine at wot, but will stall at a stop. Its driving me crazy! Looking forward to your reply and thank you for your time, Mike

Pull your plugs and let me know what color they are.

Answer
There could be a couple of reasons for you bike running like it is.
First, check the coil. Remove wires and do a OHMs test on it. The primary side (where the two wires connect) should be 2.5-3.1 OHMs. The secondary side (where the plug wires plug in should be 10,000-12,500 OHMs. If it doesn't fall in these then replace it. Test the plug wires also.
If your coil is ok then then pull the carb and check the jets for dirt. You might have a plugged jet.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
