My husband changed the stock handlebars on my Honda Shadow Ace 750 2002 to drag bars and now the throttle sticks and will not move without being moved. One thing he noticed is that if he puts the throttle grip to the end of the handlebars it moves freely.  Another thing if it is in place and he moves the cables into different locations he gets more movement but it depends on where the handlebar is moved, right or left.

Hi Karen,

Throttle cable routing can affect throttle operation. Twisted or mis-routed cables can cause a resistance feel at the throttle hand grip or cause the throttle slides to stick.

Depending upon the design of the hand grip, if positioned too far up on the handle bar the grip may rub the bar end.

Re-route cables and move grip until proper throttle operation is obtained. Make one change at a time to know what effects each change makes.

Proper throttle cable slack is important. Leave recommended amount of play in the throttle cables.

Answer
Karin,

The cable's length may not fit properly, or may not be routed properly, or may be binding. It may be a combination of these or other.

When the handlebars are turned lock to lock, the cables are being pulled. Engine rpm may increase if the engine is running and the bars are turned to the locks. When riding, we use counter-steering to turn. Very little bar movement is needed actually.

Continue working with routing. If necessary, buy and install new cables. This is necessary with other models to accomodate the new handlebars.
