Motorcycle Repair: Carb Jetting, drag pipes, exhaust cycle

Question
I have a 2001,1200 Custom Sportster, I bought it with drag pipes on it, no baffles, some have told me I need to get different jets in it, is this true?, and if so what should I replace the stock jets with?, Thanks for your advice.

Answer
First, let me say that drag pipes cause you to lose power int he lowend and midrange. They are made for high RPMs, hence the name drag pipes. If it were me I would change to a tuned exhaust. Cycle Shack make a great one for your bike.
Now for your question. when your bike was made it came from the factory a little lean to pass EPA standards. Adding the dragpipes made it leaner. Changing the jets will correct the problem, but I would suggest getting a Dyna Jet kit for your bike. You can instll it yourself in about 1.5 hours, has easy instructions to follow and will give you more throttle responce. It wil also solve the lean problem.
If you are going to just change jets I cannot tell you what jet to use. It come down to changing jets and then riding the bike and see what the responce is. What jet size that will work with one bike, will not work with another, due to the exhaust change. What you would have to do is change to larger jets and go for a ride to see how the bike responds.
Hope this helps
Good luck and happy riding
