Motorcycle Repair: backfiring, jets, good luck

76 xl. was running fine, ran out of gas. S&S super E carb. Next day started hard lots of backfiring but seems fine once I get it going. What's going on?

Answer
Being that old of a bike there was probably alot of junk in the bottom of the tank. When you rean out of gas some of it found its way into the carb. On the bottom of the S$S carb there is a 5/8 nut. Remove it and that will drain the carb and the junk out of it. If you continue to have the problem then you will have to remove the bowl of the carb and clean the jets out.
