Motorcycle Repair: Starter motors strength, output shaft, rotation direction

Question
Mike,
I am working on a project where I was using an old starter motor from a Kawasaki 750LTD(I believe a 1976). It was just not strong enough to power what I needed. All else about the motor was perfect for what I needed, i.e rotation direction, size, output shaft. I was hoping that going to a starter from a larger Kawasaki or an old Gold Wing would give me the little extra tourgue I needed. I was told by some of the salvage places that they are "all the same". I am hoping they wrong. Can you let me know if they are indeed the same? I have looked for "real" specs on line but just find the basics.
Thanks,
Pete

Answer
I usuallu only answer questions on harleys, but I might be able to help. The early starters didnt have much torque do to the fact that the motors didnt have high compression. You need to get a newer starter. As to the torque, I cannot tell you. You would need to check with some dealers for the specs.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
