Motorcycle Repair: Shuddering in front end of bike, alignment problem, triumph t140

Question
Hi Mike

I have a Triumph T140 Bonneville (1976), No modifications, have just accuired the bike.

When I am riding at around 35/40 miles and beyond the front end begins to shudder and the front wheel wobbles giving less control of the bike. Could this be something to do with adjusting the bearings in the head or is it an alignment problem?

Nick

Answer
Because of the age of the bike I would first check the bearings. You need to get the front end off the ground. Now pull on the wheel and see if it moves at the neck inline with the bike. If it does, then you have bad bearings. If they are ok, then check the tightness of the bolt which holds the forks to the neck. If that is ok, then you probably hav a bad front tire and need to replace it.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
