Motorcycle Repair: Electrical Problems, crane hi, starter button

Question
Hey Mike my name is Rich and I am a pretty good wrench as well, but I am just about to give up on this deal. ok here we go I have 1987 Softail it has the old style starter system you know with the big seperate seleniod sticking out of the case. I always had problems with the seleniods and tne relays I must have replaced them both 5 or more times in the last 12 years. This last time I replaced the seleniod the relay and the little 30amp breaker in the back (in font of the rear wheel). Everything was working great again. I did not have to jump my seliond with a wire anymore the starter worked fine from the handlebar switch just like God intended it to, and after only 2 days I got nothing no head light no starter button all I have is a small light in my dash. I have my Key switch on the tank dash set up so the first position will let you start the bike without the headlight on.I had done that a long time ago so could run the bike without the headlight on. any way the last time I stated the bike today after work I started it the same way I aways do with the light off to warm up and when I flipped the swith to turn the light on the bike Died and I had nothing. So what I did is went to the store and bought another $2.88 breaker and that did not help it is like the battery died, However when I went to jump the seleniod it was cranking just fine but still no lights or electric to ignition (crane hi fire 4) or anything only that little light in the dash.

Answer
Sounds like you have a short in the system somewhere. I would start by making sure you have a good ground, not only at the battery, but also at the point where it is grounded.
Next I would check the ket switch itself. Make sure you have power in as well as out, going to the ignition and the lights.
Let me know if this helps
Mike
