Motorcycle Repair: cv carberator, intermediate jet, carberator

Question
I have a 67 flh that had a old rebuilt bendix carb on it and the bike would start fine but wouldn't run at all . ( backfire, coughing,no power) The shop said the old bendix is worn out,no good, let's put a cv on it and you will have no more problem's. Now it fowl's the plug's after 50-75 miles , if I can get this jetted right, should it preform acceptable on an old shovelhead?  Also they kept my junk carb for their swap meet pile, if someone wanted a $15 carb that was no good?  Also, should I run a lead additive?   Thank's for any info.

Answer
First, I have never seen ca varb just wear out. The gasket leak, they get plugged up with dirt and they leak, but there is nothing inthe carb to just wear out.
Personnally, I would have gone with a S&S carb. Easier to jet and adjust.
Your carb is running rich and needs to be rejetted. Its probably the intermediate jet that is rich. If it were me I would take it back and have them get it right. It should work on your shovel with no problem, with the correct jetting. Dont worry about adding lead additive. I have ridden older bikes for years without it and havent had a problem.
Good luck and happy riding
