Motorcycle Repair: Hi Mark, My 1999 Honda..., honda cb250, precision measuring tools

Question
Hi Mark,

My 1999 Honda CB250 has been getting quite noisy lately - lots of vibration. Dropped into the local bike shop for a diagnosis, they are pretty sure it's a main bearing. It's quite expensive to fix (in the $1000 range - Australian dollars) so I'm thinking of doing the job myself. Do you think this is within the scope of the home mechanic? What percentage of the cost of a job like this would be labor costs? What else should I look for / replace while I'm in there?

Best regards Phil.

Answer
Hi Phil,

Main bearings require complete engine disassembly, special tools, and precision measuring tools. Although expensive to repair, it may cost you less to have the repair done at a professional shop. If you make a mistake, you'll pay more to correct and finish the work.

You're buying the pro's knowledge and time. You'll also get any guarantees and warranties that apply to protect you in case they make a mistake.

Mechanic's say.... "You can pay me now, or you can pay me later."

I recommend you purchase or borrow the service/repair manual and review the work involved. Decide if you want to attempt this work. You'll need the manual to do the job. If you decide not to do the work, you'll have the manual for future maintenance and repairs.

I recommend having a pro do this work.

Respectfully,
Mark Shively
