I have a '99 FXDWG mostly stock. Coming home from Daytona last week the electrical lights on the Kuryakyn gauge showed the system was overcharging, then the check engine light came on, but the bike never shut down so I was able to make it home.

I can't afford the local Harley dealers to troubleshoot it so I'd like to try and make the right diagnosis the first time. I think it is the voltage regulator, what do you think?
Answer -
Do you have a OHM meter and a AC volt meter to do some tests with?

I have a digital volt meter...

Answer
First you need to test the stator. unplug the voltage regulator from the stator. Using hte OHM setting test each prong at the stator to ground. If its grounded then the stator is bad. Start the bike and with the meter set on AC volts test the voltage coming out of the stator. Reving up the bike you should get around 60 volts. If not the the stator is bad. If the stator passes both tests then the voltage regulator is bad.
Good luck and happy riding
