Motorcycle Repair: 1981 Yamaha Virago, yamaha virago, bill silver

Question
I have just purchased this bike, got a good deal on it and it is my first street bike.  The bike is a 750 Vtwin with 2 carbs.  If you put your hand over the back cylinders carbs air intake the bike will idle.  When you remove your hand it will die and if you turn the throtel it will die.  I HAVE NO CLUE ON HOW TO WORK ON THESE CARBS.  Both spark plugs are new and after this they are black and we wipe them off.  When the engine dies after trying to give the bike throtel, you hear a pffft sound and smoke comes out of that carb.  Please help.

Answer
Matthew.... working on carburetors is not for the faint hearted or inexperienced.
You can see some of what you are in for at:

After you register you can select the make, model and year and then the components.

If you were REALLY lucky some of the Yamaha carb cleaner products might clean out the jets and other obstructions inside, but usually for bikes that have been sitting for a long time is that they need to be taken off and disassembled, cleaned in carb cleaner and then reassembled, reinstalled and adjusted on the bike with equipment you don't have.

You could have a bad petcock (fuel valve), plugged screen, and any number of other issues, including cracked intake manifolds or bad O-rings, etc.

Get a shop manual if you are going to dig into this, along with some good quality tools, including a good array of small screwdrivers....   Bill Silver
