Motorcycle Repair: electrical, brake light switch, switch tail

Question
I have 1974 ct70 minitrail mighty green. All the wiring looks good new battery horn works and the tail light.Sometimes a front signal will work,no brake light either.Tail light only bright when engine revving.Key seens fine too. thanx.

Answer
Al, you need to check the actual state of charge of the battery first. Should be around 7.5 volts. The ignition is magneto so doesn't draw any power from the electrical system.

Check ALL grounds for the entire bike, especially the turnsignal wiring and the little ground wires inside the sockets for corrosion or damage. Double check all the bulbs to be sure that they are still okay.

You need to check the wiring to the tail light and also power in and out of the brake light switch. Tail light is run off of the battery, which is charged by the magneto coils inside. If the rectifier is bad, no charge, low volts and no lights. The turn signals and brake lights draw the most voltage after the headlight.

Key both ungrounds the magneto to allow the engine to run and also controls the power into the electrical system. I imagine that the rectifier is probably the main culprit. It is that orange thing with wires, mounted up inside the frame as I recall.
