1998 FLHT 46,000 miles, starter motor makes a "grinding" noise once in a while only when engine is warm. I replaced the starter and it started doing it again. It must be something else. I checked the jackshaft and it seemed fine. All gears good also. I must be missing something what could it be?
Answer -
Does it only make this noise when you are starting it? Have you checked the chutch hub nut for tightness?
Mike

Yes, the "grinding" happens only when I push the starter button when the engine is warm. I have not checked the chutch hub nut, I thought I would ask a few questions before I removed the primary cover.

Answer
Go ahead and pull the primary cover. A good way to check it, its a little messy, but once the primary cover is off you can turn the motor over without the cover. You might be aboe to pinpoint the noise.
Check the primary chain, clutch hub nut, motor sprocket nut and the teeth on the jackshaft.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
