Motorcycle Repair: compression check, combustion chambers, compression check

Question
Thank you for answering my other question but I have one more. On my 92 GSXR I was told I need to check my compression. How can I do that? I have put my hand on the exhaust and felt that way. Is there a more reliable way of checking?

Answer
Hi Steven,

What was the cylinder compression readings with your compression check?

Feeling exhaust pressure with a hand is not a recognized procedure. : )

A compression check and a leak-down test determine the sealing properties of the combustion chambers (condition of the engine). Compression is the first test techs perform before begining a tune-up and other services to a MC. IF the cylinders need repaired, it's fruitless to spend $200 on a tune-up.

A leak-down test measures cylinder pressure loss by percentage and dertermines the source of the leaks by sound of escaping air. Both tests are very simple procedures.

Get a service/repair manual. It will help you learn and perform work, and may prevent engine damages.
