Motorcycle Repair: timing of yamaha virago, yamaha virago 1100, bikebandit com

Question
I have a 96 yamaha virago 1100 that has recently started backfiring when I try to start it. I have roll started it a couple of times and the last time I rode it I did roll start it due to battery being low. It did not run quite right and I was curious if the problem was in the timing. (for an auto I would guess it was the timing) If that is not the problem please let me know what might be causing it to backfire when you try to start it, which will not start. It sounds like it is not "hitting" right. How do you adjust the timing if that is the problem?  Thanks! Craig

Answer
Hi Craig,

From the information provided, I suspect the carburetors need thoroughly cleaned to remove varinshed gasoline, and then synchronized to complete the task.

You described the symptoms, but did not include other important information as requested in my instructions. I recommend the shop manual to help you with diagnosis and maintaining your Virago. the manual will pay for itself with the first home repair. Find manuals at "www.bikebandit.com" and see microfiche parts, too.

The timing is non-adjustable on this MC.
