Motorcycle Repair: Honda Shadow, honda 1100 shadow, dead insects

Question
I have a "95" Honda 1100 Shadow and the headlight works when it is convient for it. I have changed the bulb and the fuses. I was told to look at the start switch because the light turns off when you press the start button, and comes back on when you release the start button.and this may be causing the problem. If this is true how hard is it to replace the start switch? I have looked at it but wanted to find out more before I attempt this.Or is there something else I should try first

Thanks in advance for your help

Answer
Hi Joe,

Inspect switch contacts for corrosion, spider webs, and dead insects preventing contacts from working properly. Bug and webs are non-conductors. I've found insects to cause the problem several times over the years. In the case of corrosion, clean contacts and apply dielectric grease.

A shop would simply replace the switch assembly to avoid repeat work "come-back" at their expense.

Replacing the assy. is not difficult. Unsecure the wiring attached by straps and follow wiring to electrical connectors.
