Motorcycle Repair: Yamaha stalls when put in first gear, clutch linkage, air density

Question
Hola de Mexico!
I brought my 1998 Yamaha TW200 bike with me down here, and it has been stalling when I put it into first gear. I tried adjusting the clutch linkage, as the bike tends to jump a bit when put in first gear. The bike has 6500 miles on it so I was wondering if it needs a clutch job, and if so how extensive a job that usually is.
Muchas gracias!

Answer
Senior Gary,

What is the altitude of your Mexico environment? Has the altitude changed from the environment you left?

Air density changes with altitude. In theory, carburetor jetting needs adjusted about every 1000 feet of altitude change. Other variables effect this and may raise or lower the actual elevations which tuning is necessary.

Otherwise, check for intake air obstructions.

The clutch may need adjusted or replaced. Follow testing and adjusment procedures in the Service/Repair Manual. I suspect the clutch is fine.
