Motorcycle Repair: Shifting problems, harley sportster, oil level

Question
HI,
I currently own a 1998 Harley Sportster 1200XLC with 13554 miles on it.  I am the 3rd owner.  It shifted fine until 2 days ago when a problem started occuring.  It will only allow me into 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears.  I can not go above 3rd.  When I try, it will not let me shift higher anymore.  It acts like it is in neutral.  I never smelled any type of burning odor or anything like that.  There have been no unusual noises at all.  I checked the oil level, it is perfect.

Answer
Your trans will have to be pulled and inspected. I would venture to guess you have a bent shifter dog, but the only way to be sure is to remove it and mic them.
Don't ride the bike anymore until you have it fixed. You can lock between two gears and either crack the trans door or break a gear.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
