Motorcycle Repair: Valkyrie 1500 cc engine, clean air act, bolt holes

Question
I look at the after market sites with regards to chrome items and such for 2000 Valkyrie, 1500 cc.

One item I see from different suppliers is a '4 deg trigger wheel'.  This item is alledged to increase power and torque (only $26 - but 2.5 hrs labour to install according to supplier - advances engine timing by 6 degrees?).

Are you familiar with this product,  would it be harmful to engine?    would it reduce engine life?   would it decrease gas mileage ?  In your opinion, is it a good item to change and get for a Valkyrie? (BENEFITS VS. DRAWBACKS)  The Valkyrie is a Tourer model - not really interested in 'macho' performance ...

Tks ... look forward to hearing from you ...RON

Answer
Hi Ron,

Trigger Wheels can be changed to tune ignition timing. The design of the fingers or 'triggers' on the wheel determine if timing is advanced or retarded.

Engineers detune engines a few degrees to meet EPA & Clean Air Act standards. Installing a TW will enhance performance. The modification will not result in a drag bike, rather you may notice better acceleration or other such improvements.

Changing a TW is easier than removing camshaft sprockets and machining sprocket bolt holes to allow degreeing the cams.

There's no harm to your engine. Get a Service/Repair Manual and install the part yourself and save.
