Motorcycle Repair: BATTERY CHARGER, ok check, battery terminals

Question
I NEED TO CHARGE THE BATTERY FOR MY A.T.V. AND I AM NOT SURE IF I SHOULD SET THE CHARGER ON 2 OR 10 AMPS. IT'S A 10/2 AMP CHARGER. ( i lost the manual.)
            THANKS ,LEE

Answer
Hi Lee,

Charge the battery at 1/10th its ampre hour rating. Having no idea which ATV you have, I can only use example: Yuasa YB14AL, the ampre hour rating of this battery is 14. It should be charged with a 1.4 amp charger or less.

Use the 2 amp rate of charge. 10 amps will fry the lead from the cells and boil the electrolyte. : ) Seriously!

Is the charging system ok? Check output voltage at the battery terminals with a VOM (multimeter). Should have between 13.5 VDC and 17 VDC from idle and rpm just above idle.
