Motorcycle Repair: 79 FLH single fire voltage drop, dual plug heads, dyna coils

Question
Mike:
I have a Dyna S single fire ignition with 3 ohm Dyna coils (twin tower for dual plug heads).
I do have an OHM meter to test, and I am also in the process of replacing the plug wires anyway as one of them was losing insulation.
Plugs have been pulled will be replaced and are a nice light brownish grey around the tower and tip with black color aound the base- not much of any build-up even though from exterior appearence these are older plugs(some corrosion on exterior plug bases)
Carb is S&S super e with .070 main jet and .032 intermediate.

79 FLH with dyna s single fire dual plug installation. On cold starts I have a problem starting, but when it finally fires it usually is just as I release the starting button. I've seen plug-in starting relays for newer models(crane cams makes one) that is supposed to offest the voltage drop in this situation. Is it possible to retrofit one of these to the older style electronics?
Answer -
You are not going to be able to retrofit a new starter relay.
A few questions:
what ignition do you have?
Do you have an OHM meter to test the coil and plug wires?
Pull your plugs, what color are they?
WHat carb are you running?

Answer
First, test your battery to make sure you have a good one. When you start getting down to around 9 volts a harley is a bear to start.
Next, test the coils. You should get around 3 OHMs on the primary side and around 20,000 on the seconday side. If not then replace them.
You are already replacing the plug wires so they dont need tested.
Plugs sound ok.
If you are not doing it, when starting a bike with a S&S carb, give it a few squirts of gas before starting.
You can also retard your timing a little to make it easier to start.
Hope this helps
Mike
