Motorcycle Repair: Oil leak or engine pressure buildup, temperature guage, air tubes

Question
I own an '02 Heritage Classic with 37,500 miles on it.  I am the original owner and have adhered strictly to the recommended maintenance schedule.

At approximately 35k the tensioners on the cam went out and I had to have that replaced.  Shortly after that my husband changed the oil and filter for me using HD 60W oil since we live in Houston and HD recommends that when the temps are above 80 degrees.

Some time after that we noticed an oil leak that we were unable to locate.  Not bad, but some on the garage floor every day.  (I'm told that none of this is relevant to my question, but you did say give you any maintenance history, so maybe it will be helpful.)

Then, after 300 to 500 miles I noticed that my dipstick is blowing out (or up) and oil is leaking down the oil reservoir.  The original oil leak seemed to have stopped, but there had never been oil on the reservoir before that I recall.

I have replaced the original dipstick with an after market one that has a temperature guage on it.  My husband thought it might be fitting a little too loose thus causing it to blow out, so we bought 2 orings and put on it so that it fits quite snuggly.  The first couple of times I rode after the orings, the dipstick didn't blow out, but the last long ride I took it happened again.  (By long I mean 250 miles or so.)

Someone told us to check the air tubes coming out of the cylinder heads (those tubes behind the air filter cover...whatever they are called) to see whether they might be kinked.  We found no kinks.

Any thoughts or suggestions?  They would be greatly appreciated!

Have a wonderful New Year!  Thanks for your help.

Answer
First, since you had some work done on the bike I would see how long the shop warrented their work for. If it started leaking right after  you had the work done then they should fix it.
Now to the oil leak. Here is a easy way to find a leak. Wash the bike and let it dry. Get a can of deoderant that contains baby powder and spray the motor with it. Start the bike and go for a short ride. Where there is a oil leak the powder will turn black.
As to the pressure building up. Sounds like you have a bottom end vent problem. Check those tubes again and make sure you can blow through them. One might be plugged.
Good luck and happy riding
