Motorcycle Repair: Starter, jackshaft, flht

Question
-------When the starter is removed should the jack shaft rotate freely in both directions as well as travel in and out? And, is the free running clutch in the starter gearing? I took my old starter apart and could not find the free running clutch or any damaged parts gears etc. It was making a screeching sound and drawing 200+ amps on a DC clampon meter. I bought a new starter but have not finished installing it yet and I had a few questions brewing in my head while I was sitting here at work.

1998 FLHT Starter Jackshaft. Is this just coupling linkage or is some gearing and clutching going on? I have not taken it apart so I was just wondering and I cannot seem to find a good exploded diagram of this area to figure it out without dissassembly.
Answer -
The Jackshaft is the linkage between the starter and the gear on the clutch. It moves in and out by the solenoid. There is no gearing involved in the jackshaft.

Answer
Yes to both question. the jackshaft should move and turn when the starter is removed and the clutch is located in the starter. You problaby had a bearing going out in the starter and that is why the big draw. On starters, you usually spend more money and time trying to repair them than just replacing them.
