Motorcycle Repair: 1985 Honda XR100, honda xr100, wire strands

Question
Bike has been totally re-built, runs great for a while on new plugs and then gas fouls out.  You can clean plug about 4 or 5 times and then throw away, then put new plug in and start again.  I've been told it could be electrical, but I think its the carburator.  Do you think this is the problem?  And if so, where do I buy parts?

Answer
Hi John,

From the description given and without being present to perform basic tests, I suspect an ignition or other related electrical problem. The problem could be carburetor, ignition, or a combination of both. Any tech would have to investigate the symptoms and perform a few checks to offer a diagnosis.

Do you have the service manual for this MC? If not, obtain a copy and follow the troubleshooting charts. Otherwise, it's to the tech she goes.

Was the engine work performed by a pro shop?

Check cylinder compression, electrical connectors and ground connections. All connections must be clean and tightly fastened. All wiring must be free of defects such as broken wire strands, chaffed insulation, corrosion, and moisture.
