Mike,
I have a 78 shovel with a 4spd tranny. I recently had to replace my clutch cable because it snapped at the bars. I notice that when I am rolling and get into it or if I try to get into it from 2nd to third tht I can feel and hear the clutch clipping. I am hoping it is the clutch not the tranny. I am not sure how old the clutch is because I have only owned the bike for 8 months. Is there a way to adjust the springs or replace them or are there specs on the clutch travel or dimensions on it. Any advice on this one.

Thanks,
Matt

Did is slip before you replaced the cable?
Mike

Mike,
It was doing this before I replaced the cable, yes.

Answer
first thing you need to do is check to see if the clutch is to tight. Loosen the clutch cable so that it is shorter. Remove the derby cover. You will see the adjuster in the center of the clutch. Loosen the locknut and turn the adjuster outward. Now slowly turn the adjuster inward just until it touches. Now turn it out about 1/8 of a turn. Tighten the locknut. Now adjust the cable so that you have about 1/8 inch play in the clutch lever. Now you have it set. take the bike for a ride and see if it slips. If it does remove the clutch pads and check them. In the old shovels they get oil on them and that makes them slip. You can take rough sandpaper and clean them up. If they are to wore then they need replaced.
Good luck and happy riding
