Motorcycle Repair: Oil Leak 2002 Kaw 1500 Classic Fi, valve cover gasket, bike bandit

Question
Just noticed a minor oil leak at the top of the rear cylinder, right side with only 25000 miles on engine and the only major midification is the addition of Vance Hinds Longshot Exhaust (Baffels out) can't believe it could be head gasket, any ideas? Not much of a leak but still disturbing since I take very good care of the bike.

Answer
Hi Lyle,

I suspect the valve cover gasket has become brittle and is leaking. Visit Kawasaki's website and look at the parts microfiche to view all the parts in exploded view. May help diagnose the leak.

I've used Dr. Scholl's Foot Powder Spray to locate minute oil leaks. The spray goes on pure white as a very fine powder. Leaking oil turns the powder brown. Powder wipes off easily. A can of spray is about $8!!!

After you've located the leak and if you need additional assistance, email me. mshively1@woh.rr.com

See microfiche parts here: "www.buykawasaki.com" or "www.bikebandit.com"

Once Kawasaki's site opens, click green text "Vehicle Information" from the menu, and then "View Parts Diagram" from the menu. A new page opens, select "Motorcycle" from the menu, (or enter your VIN for the “history” of your MC). Select the year, make and model from the menus that follow.

With Bike Bandit, click "OEM Parts" and then select your MC from the menus that follow.

Have a Blessed Christmas day.
