Motorcycle Repair: honda shadow, ebay auctions, drain bolt

Question
I have  a 1985  500 cc honda that has been in storage for about 5 years,  The oil and gas where not drained before placing it in storage.  What do you recommend I do to get it up and running.

How do I drain the gas and oil myself.

thanks steve

Answer
Steve, you may be getting in deep on this project. I would recommend that you disconnect and remove the fuel tank for cleaning, then you will probably have to remove and rebuild the carbs, replace fuel lines and petcock/filter.

Oil drain bolt is on the left front side of the motor, oil filter is a spin-on type on the front of the crankcase.

You will need to drain the coolant, replace the thermostat and inspect all hoses for the cooling system.

Then, you should flush the front brake system and probably rebuild the caliper and check the pads.

You may be able to get away with using the Yamaha Carb cleaner and tank cleaner products, but if there is rust in the tank, you will need to treat it and then use a sealer to prevent further rust and contamination.

Change the oil in the rear wheel drive unit. Buy a new battery, of course. Lubricate all cables and linkages.

Dispose of all used fluids properly, use gloves to protect your hands from contamination.
