Motorcycle Repair: 883cc to 1200cc Sportster upgrade, wisco pistons, gasket kit

Question
Mr. Wells,

I would like to know what in your experience and opinion is the most reliable and powerful 883cc to 1200cc upgrade as far as parts to use, etc. Right now, my bike is a stock (as far as the actual motor is concerned)1999 H-D Sportster 883 Standard with an S&S Super E carb and Vance & Hines straight shot pipes being the only major "motor-related" modifications. I have just moved to Arizona from Washington State and feel it's time for a little more power now that I can actually ride more than three months out of a year without getting poured on. If you could include some estimates on the price of the parts as well, I'd appreciate it. Thank you for your time.

Scotty

Answer
The easiest way to change your bike over to a 1200 is to get a set of Wisco pistons that are made for a 883 to 1200 conversion. That way you dont have to do any headwork on the bike. You can have the cylinders bored instead of buying new ones which should save you some money. While you are doing the top end I would suggest changing the cams to make the bike breath better. I would go with an Andrews V4/N4.
The Wisco Pistons will be around $235.00. Top end gasket kit around $50.00. I cant tell you how much the boring is for that area of the country. Cam set is around $280.00.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
