Motorcycle Repair: starter, 1200d, great shape

Question
Hi Chris
I have a 1992 Yamaha FJ 1200D with about 135,000 kms (90,000 miles) all stock, great shape and still runs well. Lately I've noticed that it doesn't crank well when hot. Starts fine cold. Sort of behaves like a high compression harley. Cranks a half turn or so then stops. Will do this a few times and eventually starts, but seems to be getting worse. My shop manual refers to servicing the starter when the engine is out. Is that really necessary?
Any help or suggestions you can offer would be appreciated.
Thanks
George

Answer
Hi George.
This does sound like the starter motor contacts need cleaning.
Pull the starter motor and clean the brushes and contacts.  I'l bet money that there are a few blackened spots that are not getting good current.

Start there and see what you find.

Good luck.
