I recently purchased this bike. The carbs have been cleaned. I reset the float on the left side due to it leaking from the overflow while the engine is off. Now it is extremely hard to start when its cold. Once it has warmed up it runs great. I sure would like to know what is causing this.

Gary
Answer -
Gary, I remember having some problems like this with my bike, too.
The float level is 15.5mm, so I hope that you didn't lower it excessively to compensate for the real reason for the carb flooding. A leaking carb usually has a worn or contaminated float valve, but a high float level will do the same thing, too.
I recall that the carb chokes were kind of loosely sprung, so that the flaps would get sucked open during cranking, instead of staying put to enrichen the mixture during cold starts. Pull off the air cleaner tubes and watch the choke flaps. Make sure that both are fully closing when the cable is pulled up and that one isn't flopping around during cranking. You may have to strengthen the linkage or spring that connects the two carbs together.

Bill,

I pulled the tubes off and the choke is closing properly. It may need a little tightening on the right one. Before I wrote to you, I had tried cranking it when the weather was cold and thats when the problem started. Today when I tried what you had said, I tried to crank it and it cranked a lot easier and the weather was considerably warmer, I also took the air cleaner out and it looks like the original one from 79 (haha) I don't think that would prevent it from cranking with the chokes on. I am going to replace the filter and try that. If you have any other suggestions it would be appreciated. Thanks for everything so far..

Sincerely,
Gary

Answer
Gary, see if you can get that right side to respond the same as the left side carb. Also, don't give it any throttle when you are starting it. Just full choke (be sure that they are going fully closed and then crank it.

If that doesn't work, try twisting the throttle once or twice and then do the above.
