Motorcycle Repair: used oil additive, honda gl1100, wet clutch

Question
Hey Falcon, Thanks for the quick reply and hopefully the good news of a good flush doing the job. Next question is what to use? Heard a lot of talk about MMO, would this do it or is there something just for flushing that I should look for? Sorry for the lack of knowledge but it seems to come easy for me.          Thanks again      William          -------------------------

Hey Chris, I have an '81 Honda GL1100 Goldwing. It was running OK but smoked a little. I added a little additive (like STP) before I read about the wet clutch. Now the bike wont move at all. I know I did wrong but what I need to know is if I can wash this stuff out or am I going to have to tear into the clutch to clean or rebuild?

Hi William.
It's worse than that.  You will have to flush the engine, at the very least, to purge the additive out.  Then you need to put in fresh oil.  To get rid of excess smoke, you need to find out why it is smoking and fix that problem properly.  Usually, it's rings and/or seals.  Worst case, you need to replace the clutchplates as well.

Good luck.

Answer
Hi again, William.
MMO is good stuff, but as far as flushing the engine, I would ask around to some of the Honda mechanics as to what they would suggest as far as the best flush for their engine.  There are a number of good engine flushes out there, but you don't want to use one that will damage the seals, gaskets or clutchplates.  So read the label very carefully.

Good luck.
