Motorcycle Repair: starting a Yamaha 360, mc repair, troubleshooting chart

Question
Hi Mark, I wrote to Michael Petruccione last Aprilo about a 360 Yamaha my friend CJ is working on. His advice was very helpful, but we hit a snag. It may indicate why we're not getting any juice with the new battery. All we get is lights in front--no horn, turn signal or brake lights.

Among several other tests we did, Michael said to make sure the coil has correct low and high tension resistance (procedure is in your manual...) Well, we followed the manual's directions to test the coil. We got a reading for only one of those types of resistance. (I can't recall which now.) There was nothing for the other. Did we do the test wrong? Or is that an indication that the coils aren't good?

Answer
Hi Nancy,

I can send you electrical testing information files that will assist you. From the description given, I cannot determine what or how the tests were conducted. Also, differences between test meters used will cause reading variations from those given in the manual.

The windings in the ignition coils should have ohm readings. Check the meter (Ohm setting) scale. The part could be defective.

Trace voltage with a 12vdc test light and learn where voltage is (and is not). Visit: www.dansmc.com to learn more about testing. Visit Dan's free "On-line MC Repair Course."
