Motorcycle Repair: electrical, honda pc800, regulator rectifier

Question
I just bought a 1989 honda pc800. While riding the bike home, the motor would die. It did not have power in the battery.  I charged it for 10 to 15 minutes and could continue for about 15 to 20 miles. It would stop again and I would recharge it. It runs fine otherwise. Is it the battery or something else I am missing? Help please.

Answer
Hi Norm,

From the description given, I suspect the battery is defective. I would need more intel to goive an accurate diagnosis. I cannot say if the battery is defective because it is old and worn, or if other components of the charging system is defetive.

The charging system needs to be tested. Start with a fully charged battery in good condition. Perform an output test of the altenator. Check Regulator/Rectifier diodes. Check wiring and switches for defects and corrosion.

Purchase the repair manual for the Pacific Coast. All testing how-to information is there with illustrations.
