Motorcycle Repair: changing sprockets, honda cb 650z, rear sprocket

Question
Hi Chris,I have a 1980 honda cb 650z and I,m about to change the chain and sprockets.
While I'm doing this I would like to lower the engine speed at higher speeds. I am not terribly worried about bottom end all out acceleration,I would prefer to drop the revs by about a 1000 at 65/70mph.I have seen sprockets advertised with one more or less teeth but I,m not sure what the right combination should be,any help would be great.cheers paul

Answer
Hi Paul.
A smaller rear sprocket will increase low end performance and will increase engine speed at higher speeds.  Therefore a larger rear sprocket will lower rpm's at higher speeds than the smaller or the original.  This means that at low end, you would lose some performance.  But you said that you weren't concerned about that.  Just make sure that you get the front sprocket that goes with that.  Normally, the only sprocket that you need to change is the rear, but sometimes a front sprocket will need to be a different size as well.

Good luck.
